SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) is a terminal progressive neuromuscular disease. Both parents have to pass the defective gene in order for a child to have SMA. In SMA the motor neurons in the body progressively die due to a protein deficiency; as a result it affects almost all of the voluntary muscles in the body leaving babies unable to hold their heads up, sit up, breathe properly, swallow, cough, speak and obviously move.  The brains of these children are not affected by the disease, and studies show that they tend to be very bright and sociable.  Even though SMA is not widely known statistics show that 1 in 40 people unknowingly carry the SMA gene; simple blood work can determine if someone carries this gene.  SMA is the #1 genetic killer of children under 2 years of age, and type 1′s typically die from respiratory issues before their 2nd birthday.  While there is no cure, today some live longer lives with the help of some equipment and proactive intervention.  With proper funding a cure for SMA is viable…please help us find a cure!
